This is part 2 of a 3-part series in which I am sharing some thoughts about how the recruiting process is going to change going forward. If you missed part 1, I talked about how we are seeing a massive amount of prime talent available in the job market—truly more than any time in most of our lifetimes. Business in the New Normal

As we return to business in the new normal, we know that acquiring resilient talent who can quickly adapt to the new pace will be essential for success. The simple truth is that employees who showed promise under the old normal conditions may not be well suited for the new normal. That’s just an honest business evaluation you have to make. Personally, I think the new normal holds unlimited potential, though we can’t fully define it just yet. However, it will require us to become very quick to accept the cold hard truth, whatever that truth may be.

One of my Marine Corps icons under which in one capacity or another I had the opportunity to serve was legendary General James Mattis. Many of you may know him as a recent Secretary of Defense, but in the Marine Corps, his status has been known for sometime now. Famous for his quotes, he once said “You cannot allow any of your people to avoid the brutal facts. If they start living in a dream world, it’s going to be bad.” He also once famously said, “Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.”

Fortunately, the latter quote isn’t quite necessary these days, but you can see why Marines revere the man. The prior quote, however, is what business leaders need to take to heart. The post COVID-19 era will reveal some brutal truths about our industries and our employees. We must be quick to accept these truths and act on them. I have no doubt that we can adapt to this new normal and even thrive in this new normal. However, it will require us accepting these brutal truths and mourning very little over what was.
